Problem
According to the Global Food Security Index 2021, from 113 countries registered, Indonesia is far from the top position. In the farming affordability factors, Indonesia is ranked 58, while in the farming availability factors Indonesia rank 48, and even Indonesia is ranked 47 in the Quality & Safety factor.
Uneven distribution necessary input of water sources
Water is essential for crops to grow. More than 40% of harvests in Indonesia fail due to the lack of water. Certain geographic areas have the excess water supply for farming yet lack the right infrastructure to move water from its source to the farmer's land.
Due to the lack of irrigation, farmers typically only farm during the rainy seasons, which leads to shift in employment or unemployment during the dry seasons. Farmers who are fortunate enough to have access to ships may become fishermen during the dry season to keep their families fed.
Inability to acquire required technology
Most of Indonesian farmers still depend on high degree of manual work, farming practices which rely on the number of unknown factors, and also knowledge that is based on word of mouth. These condition makes farmers productivity and output become volatile.
Technology adoption is needed to precisely calculate and select inputs to use and outlays in order to not only increase yield and productivity, but also reducing carbon footprint.
Providing the essential and necessary needs while also enabling farmers to acquire and adopt become the main challenge.
It is not only the availability of good agriculture input that become the problem, on top of that, the farmers ability to acquire the required input that become the root of problem. And this is worsened with the fact that most of Indonesian farmers are trapped in the poverty.
Let’s solve this challenge together!
